Finally finishing the growing frame

Hello everyone! Welcome to our third post about aquaponics. In this post we will be wrapping up the construction of the growing frame with the help of our friend Dennis.

In order to install the PVC tubing that will deliver the fish-poop water to the plants, Scott purchased a couple of hole saws. The PVC that we will be using was purchased from Hardware Sales. We would have preferred to used recycled PVC from the ReStore, but due to the uncertainty of what the tubes were used for prior, we decided to buy new tubes.

Here is Scott drilling one of the top holes for the irrigation pipe that will distribute water to the plants below.

Our good friend Dennis was in town today and swung by to help us out. After sorting gravel with Nick for a while, we put him to work on the bottom PVC pipe that will collect the water from the plants and direct it to the fish tank/barrel. In order to cut the pipe open long-ways to receive the water from above, Dennis masterfully used the circular saw to make the necessary cuts.

In order to adapt from the large diameter PVC pipe to the small diameter pipe the will flow into the fish tank, we purchased a 90 degree threaded elbow. We didn't really know how we were going to attach it to the larger pipe. The tools we had at our disposal to make it work included fish-safe silicon glue, a hole saw, and a drill.

Drilling the center hole for the bottom drain went smoothly with the new hole bits, fits, 'like a glove'.
Safely glasses on top of my head do not represent the ideal safety protocol, luckily no splinters in the eye.

After Denis' masterful cuts, the drain was assembled and looks fantastic, well done all!  This will catch all the water from the eight lines of bottles and return the water to the fish tank, clean and aerated.

Nick, getting in on the customization philosophy of the project created his own tool, the 'prison shiv' to make the final cuts to the frame pieces.

The final product in all its glory. With the top PVC piece assembled and in place; all that remains is to place the frame in the window, put the bottom drain in and add the planter bottles.  Now the real fun begins, stay tuned to our next post...
